They were political giants in the 1980s. Grandees from different sides of the political divide. Now both elevated to the House of Lords, these old adversaries with a mutual respect for each other’s intellect and political skill present the first in a new series of debates ‘Conversations’ talking about their days in Parliament and their view of Westminster today.
Conservative Douglas Hurd served as both Home and then Foreign Secretary under Margaret Thatcher and John Major. Roy Hattersley served in Harold Wilson’s government and Jim Callaghan’s cabinet. He was also deputy leader of the Labour Party from 1983 to 1992.
