The Pantomime Season is in full swing at Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, but it’s not just on stage that the actors can be seen giving their all...
Backstage the cast of Aladdin can be seen relaxing – or perhaps we should say competing! – by playing the new edition of Guildford Monopoly.
Aptly occupying the square that many of us associate with the heart of Theatreland, the Guildford edition sees the Yvonne Arnaud take the Leicester Square spot on the board’s London original.
While Widow Twankey, Wishee Washee and PC Pongo enjoy a friendly game of Monopoly, the staple family game can be the source of festive feuds in some households – so much so that Monopoly will open a hotline (0800 689 4903) from December 24 to 26, for you to call for advice on any game-based arguments.
Marketing Director of Hasbro UK & Ireland, Craig Wilkins said: "We'll have experts on hand with the official rulebooks to instantly settle any disputes, and advice on how to resolve common complaints, with each person also having the opportunity to make a donation to Childline when they call."
Winning Moves UK, developers of the board under official license from Hasbro, say the Guildford board has proved extremely hot property in the run-up to Christmas.
“Online sales have been extremely brisk,” says a Winning Moves UK spokesperson. “Come Christmas we reckon the only boards left could be the ones on Santa’s sleigh.”
The board features in total 28 Guildford landmarks replacing the likes of Mayfair and Park Lane from the London original. Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud Theatre features on the board alongside local landmarks the Cathedral, the Castle, the University of Surrey and the Spectrum.
The game is available at all good toy and book stores, including Smyths, Waterstones, WH Smith and The Works as well as being widely available online.
