What a sad business, being funny

- Limelight (1952)

Charlie Chaplin's brilliant comic creation 'The Little Tramp' was the first global icon in cinematic history, and is still universally adored. But his remarkable story of stardom and success has an incredibly humble beginning.

Born into horrendous, grinding poverty, Charlie's childhood was filled with unimaginable hardship and loss. Whilst his father destroyed himself with alcohol, his mother slowly went psychotically insane, leaving Charlie and his brother Syd to fend for themselves in the South London slums. In a desperate attempt to escape his brutal reality, Charlie fled for the shining lights of the vaudeville musical hall and vowed solemnly to become a star. But his past, as it turned out, would never be far behind him.

Critically-acclaimed Arrows & Traps return with an examination of the relationship between life and art, and invite you to discover how Chaplin spun personal tragedy into universal comedy, in a moving and joyful exploration of one of the world’s most remarkable lives.
