Sidney H. Sime: Theatre in Caricature
Sidney Sime’s caricatures show his sharp eye, imagination and fascination with theatre. Working with critic Arnold Goldsworthy (known as ‘Jingle’), he drew leading late Victorian and Edwardian actors and performers for reviews of West End shows.
By the late 1890s, Sime was an established illustrator whose swift, expressive line wittily captured the likeness, character and performances of his theatrical subjects. Published in magazines such as Pick-Me-Up, Pall Mall and The Tatler, the artworks in this exhibition record Sime’s distinctive response to the spectacle of his age.
Who was Sidney Sime?
Sidney Herbert Sime (1865–1941) was born in Manchester and worked in the Yorkshire coal pits before studying at Liverpool School of Art. A successful book and magazine illustrator, Sime is best known for his atmospheric images for the fantasy author, Lord Dunsany. Beyond illustration, he produced set designs for theatrical productions including Henrik Ibsen’s The Pretenders and Maurice Maeterlinck’s The Blue Bird.
In 1904, Sime and his wife Mary settled at Crown Cottage in Worplesdon in Surrey. This was at the invitation of his friend, the writer and society entertainer, Duncan Tovey. Here Sime’s art took on a fresh energy; he embraced large-scale oil painting and drew caricatures of local people at the village pub.
Today, the village is home to The Sime Gallery where visitors can view his extensive art collection.
